CLOSE TO YOU International Puppet Festival Taipei 2012

In the chilly autumn air of 2010, Close To You International Puppet Festival made its first appearance in Taipei.
The presentation of the festival was unique in that it utilized a guide who took the audience through the streets of Taipei's urban landscape during the autumn evening, in order to reach each unconventional performance space; under the glow of moonlight and street light, every one of those little journeys was full of excitement. The objects and puppets inside each intimate space were lit as if by the light of a sprinkler, playing out their own entrancing stories.

White
Taiwan|Derrick Wei|Objects+Body|Non-verbal
Surrounded by a white sheet, white skin, and white fluorescent lamps in the hospital, I dedicated my body to you while you were leaving so you might dance away with lively steps in spite of your heavy body. I’m here standing in the present, but you are there in the memory. Go through the white tunnel and we shall meet.
Inspired by the impression of white, Derrick Wei wrote down his memory of his father. He transforms the white paper into the image of his father, the scene of the hospital, and his childhood.

I Have a Name

"Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it"
George Santayana

This play celebrates the joys of childhood in the shadow of war and genocide. I Have a Name does not focus on the horrors, but instead is silently remembering several children. The play takes the audience on a voyage of realization what happens when we are not aware of the forces of evil, and that this can happen again anywhere in the world, anytime. The play was inspired after viewing the book ‘In Memoriam’ by Guus Luijters and Aline Pennewaard. The book contains a list of names, as well as 3000 photos, of all the 17.964 Jewish, Roma and Sinti children that were deported from the Netherlands between 1942 and 1945, and killed in concentration camps.

All proceeds from this performance will be donated to Amnesty International
